to, too, your, you're
I'm amazed that so many smart people who make otherwise brilliant comments in here and on YT don't seem to know that "to" is the wrong word when the meaning is "also" and that "your" is wrong when the meaning is "you are."
For all of you brainiacs still struggling with the basics of English: Use "too" when you want to say "also." Use "you're" when you mean "you are."
Personally, I don't mind when a stupid person gets these words wrong but it's annoying as hell when the more astute posters do it. I just expect more from them where simple grammar is involved. Look around and you'll see quite a few of the brightest forums posters appearing clueless about these words.

It's hard to get your grammar correct when you haven't slept since the first CiW video came outSuspiciousMind wrote:Personally, I don't mind when a stupid person gets these words wrong but it's annoying as hell when the more astute posters do it. SuspiciousMind, you sound like my English faculty department meeting. I'm an English/Literature teacher, and I have become immune to the grammatical errors on the Internet. (I'm not going to lie, I still have the urge to get out my red pen and point folks to The Elements of Style sometimes.)
My favorite usage joke:
Notice the importance of usage
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman! Without her, man is nothing!
My favorite usage joke with which to prank my class:
Notice the importance of usage
my gift to you:
candy
no homework
(class salivates expecting treats insteading of reading questions, until...)
My gift to you:
Candy?
No! Homework!
I know it's neither funny nor grammatically correct. However, it gives me a kick. I digress.
Yes, bad grammar is annoying.

I don't post this with the intention to ruffle any feathers or anything, but this post really doesn't seem appropriate to me. The tone is pretty insulting, and I'm not sure the purpose is anything higher than just to rant. It just being a rant may not matter - the section is called "concerns and complaints", and while I've taken that to mean "a place to bring up issues that need resolution on the site or in the story", maybe it's intended for letting off steam as well; some clarification on that would be good - but the tone seems a little... well, yeah, just needlessly insulting.
I could be all wrong, on all fronts, and I'm okay with that. I guess this is just me saying "this seems like it might be against forum rules to me, could a mod or admin please check in?"
Like I said, I don't mean to ruffle any feathers, or be that twerpy obnoxioius girl. (And frankly, I'm a bit of a grammar and spelling snob myself. I try not to be, because I have a lot of very smart friends who have problems with certain aspects of language, but I still am sometimes, because oy! Sometimes you just wonder how they can't see it!) This just struck me as... I don't know. The tone of this board overall is really good, and this just kind of struck me funny, I guess.
Edit: Actually, I see that a mod has already joined in the thread, so maybe I am all wrong.
I don't know. It just seems awfully negative/unwelcoming to me. *shrug*

Team Daniel!
The thing is, forums are somewhere between an email and an IM. I usually monitor forums (and IM) while I'm doing something else. The 2 mistakes given: to for too and your for you're, could easily be typing mistakes or shortened words just for brevity. If you want proofed copy, read the newspaper (and complain about their grammer as well).

And remember, we're all human and make mistakes... I've seen grammar mistakes make it past professional editors and into first editions of books.toadlguy wrote:If you want proofed copy, read the newspaper (and complain about their grammer as well).

Er...I cant say anything about anyone else (obviously) but my posts were all supposed to be in a joking manner. I can be pretty anal when it comes to grammar and spelling and I thought this topic was pretty darn amusing.
I mean, I'll be honest, these kind of errors annoy the hell out of me..even when I do them! Because I'm a dork that way.
But I didn't mean anything insulting or "negative/unwelcoming", and I thought that my previous posts in this thread pointed to that fact (and I'm dissapointed nobody laughed at my pic! For shame! ). If it didn't, I'm sorry.
