Yes art school students hate Dali, because they think he "sold out", they think he commercialized art, and became a showman, a celebrity.

But whether that is a valid criticism anymore is open to question. It seems that many contemporary artists seek celebrity status, and the lines between commercialized art and non-commercialized art are blurred.

Jeff Koons for example

I'm totally down with Jeff Koons..and Andy Warhol, even though he was totally commercial, is like my hero...I just find Dali to be a little "where's Waldo" and he was such a di*k. I don't know, it's just not for me. Plus, I think his paintings are ugly..and even though they teach you not to be like this in art school, I honestly only like things that look good. Anything I find ugly..like Lucien Freud or Egon Schiele, I hate it.

I don't like Dali either, but I think for me it's more that I am too familiar with it, I discovered Dali when I was still a teenager, same thing with the impressionists, the Art Museum here is Seattle seems to have one impressionist show after the other, it bores the hell out of me and I never go see them, even though when I first discovered impressionism I loved it.

When I go to see an art exhibition I want to be surprised, unfortunately there is a dearth of contemporary art in Seattle. There was a recent show of Vik Muniz here (I think he lives in Florida?), which I liked but I wonder if I liked it only because I am so starved for contemporary art.

Yea, I studied art in France, first in the south, at a regional school in Nice, then at the Beaus Art in Paris, only to find out when I got back the States that nobody cared, studying in France was considered too cliche, and they only wanted MFA's from Cal Arts, or RISD.

Oh, Mr. Fancypants I see. I was so over the whole thing by the time I graduated..now I'm gonna end up going back for interior design. At least I won't have to go through all that BS brainwashing "foundation" crap again though

See that's what I got "Mr. Fancypants", but I continued to make art anyway for quite a while, I lived in Los Angeles for eight years, had a studio in downtown L.A., about the time postmodernism was all the rage, and punk music was king, is was a great scene and very exciting.

I haven't made art for a while, I work as a cabinetmaker here in Seattle.
