ok, am i insane or did some posts get deleted while I went away for a bit...i'm searching for one of my posts and I see no sign of deletion. (not mad, just wondering if I really did post it or imagined I did because I really don't want to go back to the funny farm...)

on a more serious note...
I appreciate that the Ops are getting together and discussing a way to make things better, more fair world! w00t for them!
And I appreciate Trainer for finally clearing up some questions we've been asking.
(BTW...there may be some arguments to this, but I'll recommend myself for mod-ship...i'm excellent in being unbiased when i need to be! lol)

I think the suggestion was made earlier about moderators using a different name "on the job" to help avoid certain dramas and personal issues.

I've seen this done elsewhere, where the moderators were totally anonymous and their posts were reserved for moderating purposes only. Although, at that location, posting under a different screen name was really easy...because a group of names were linked and you could select the user name from a drop down list without having to log out of one name and into another.

That might be a good option and might prevent some butt-kissing too. Plus, when acting anonymous moderators aren't going to be afraid to be tough on their "friends" when they need to be consistent.
The anonymous moderator idea actually sounds like a good idea. I'm sure that not wanting to upset your online friends does affect how people moderate. And they'd be able to be firm without feeling guilty.

Not that anyone cares, but when I've moderated fora, there never was a sense of guilt when it came to doing what had to be done. I suppose having command of my emotions made it relatively easy not to compromise on the responsibility.

Yes, but some of us actually have feelings.

I would like to say, that in choosing/nominating new mods, can we try to avoid suggesting people just because they have a high post count or because they are popular? Actually nominate people who who think can be rational, decent moderators.

Obviously, that leaves me out.

Good suggestion. After all, a high post count is only an indication that someone posts more. It has no bearing on or correlation to one's ability to moderate.

Especially when a great number of those posts are "chit-chat" type posts.

Like last night i nthe Videos section under the lastest video. There were 20+ pages devoted to one user trying to track down the actors at the Holiday Inn in Ukiah. The majority of their posts were like reading a chat room with single lines. Fortunately, it worked out and they moved it elsewhere.

LOL.

Glad to see that this thread has come to pick up lines. So much better, IMHO than the fighting.

I might be beating a dead horse here, but had errands and then came back. I would just like to go on record that I am not sure I like the idea of the mods being anonymous. Friendships are inevitable, which can lead to biases, as do thoughts and theoretical viewpoints, However, the way it is now we at least know about these things. . If we didn't know about them it probably would not eliminate any already existing biases, it would just make them more hidden., which could have the side effect of legitimizing the bias. I, for one, would rather have more information than less.

Nothing personal to you mods, for the most part you are a very level headed crew, and I really think that you do a great job. I don't want to see you babysitting here, it would take away from all the great info and recap posts you all provide for us....and then I would never know what was going on.

Well, that is a good point.

Although, I'd like to think that inconsistent moderations would show no matter the username. If there is a pattern of a mod favoring certain users or situations over another, it would become clear through patterns.

The thing with anonymous moderation is that you need to have mods willing to remain as such and honestly be as unbiased as possible. I think that several of the mods here are quite capable of that...I'm not sure all of them are.

Note that I didn't point any fingers in any direction, so don't just go and assume which mod(s) I may or may not be talking about. Chances are likely you'll be wrong in your assumption. The reason I said that was for a variety of reasons, since each mod is different in how they do things. I'm not questioning their suitability as a mod....I'm wondering if a couple of them could really be anonymous and unbiased...should that be a direction they want to go.

I say that only because I know if I went and registered another username...people would probably figure out who I am based on my posting style and inability to type correctly. I'm too lazy to change my entire posting style just to fool people.

Besides, deep down, I think I take great delight in annoying the complete shit out of people by not "leaving" as they would want me to. Yes, I'm childish enough to admit that.

In the past the Mod has always been given a NEW log-in so that they are no associated with their old S/N but can still use their old S/N to hang out and BS with friends...
I have no clues to offer you... But I know how to download if you're offering!!!
