Ad-aware is best for spyware. AVG focuses more on anti-virus and trojans. Your best option is to install and use both.

completely true. AVG is wicked for viruses and trojans though, because I had a bevy of both and it got rid of them no problem.

In addition to Ad-Aware, I'd recommend Spybot S&D. It's also free, and you'll note that when scanning your computer with both, one will pick up what the other's missed.

Bumping this thread because I seem to have something ICKY on my PC and Ad-Aware/AVG are not seeming to take care of it and I'm just curious if we have any computer-savvy folk on here that would like to help a sister out. :)

As AP said, Spybot Search and Destroy will catch some things AdAware won't, and vise versa... There's also the commercial software from Webroot, Spyware Cleaner... There's a trial version, so if you get the problem taken care of within 30 days of install, you shouldn't need to buy it.

*snuggles my smart lil Mutey!*

So I can get away with having Spybot S&D on my computer at the same time as Ad-Aware and AVG? AND Spyware cleaner? They wont, oh I don't know, make each other not work as good or nothing? :D (excuse the lack of techie skillz)

Also, say I run all of these things and fix everything they find and whatnot. What if there's something they dont catch that's just lurking on my PC somewhere? Where would I look?

In my experience it's best to run multiple Spyware/Adware programs but only ONE antivirus (such as AVG). While the spyware programs all play nice together (luckily since no single one finds EVERYTHING), the Virus Scanners (AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc) definitely do not get along together.
We shall nonetheless move forward to carve a name for ourselves in the annals of bold insurgency and death-defying derring-do. Once I have a keen blade at my hip and the Jolly Roger is flapping high above me, I believe I will find my true calling.

So I'd be cool downloading the other stuff along with AVG? Thanks!
