She didn't exist?
I thought it was interesting that Bree says "I didn't even exist!" when talking about her public school, cafeteria days. Especially given the discussion about the Cassie-is-Bree's-other-self potential.

Holy Moses, Bree looks better (less tired) but so seriously skinny. Her arms look like they're going to break off her shoulders. You can tell Jess's body type isn't meant to be that thin, her shoulders are too broad (not in a manly way, mind).
Hope Jess is losing the weight sensibly
And yeah, I agree that Bree believes that Daniel has showed her his true self- a "beast". I mean, he is getting a little creepy. I'm not buying the "I went to talk to Bree again" story, he's just waitin' outside her house to keep tabs on her.
In other news I really like her top.

"Have you ever transcended space and time?"
"Yes. No. Uh, time not space. No. I don't know what you're talking about."

That's a really good point, that both characters are sort of "turning into" something else. Note to Daniel: point out this fact, and the fact that your change is simply in response to (and in alarm at) her change. kimmiewku, you've solved their problem. Are you a relationship counselor ?kimmiewku wrote: Bree feels like maybe she doesn't know Daniel anymore.
he doesn't agree with what her religion is turning her into.

I found it a bit interesting that she said no body teased her in this video, when in the past video of Daniel talking about inviting Bree to a party, he said kids did tease her. Maybe I missed something?

The comments about her school experience, taken together, suggest that her parents allowed her to try school probably for an entire six-week grading period, possibly a little more.
Bree originally was in school at 14, just turning 15, making her a 9th or 10th grader and Daniel probably already a junior then. Remember this happened two years ago, when the family first moved to California.
The first week was horrible.
Then Daniel befriended her.
Then other kids began spreading rumors about her.
During this period she got to know another outcast named Cassie, same grade as Daniel but apparently not in Daniel's circle of friends. Cassie may similarly follow an unusual religion (scientology, possibly, or her parents could have been Mormon polygamists), or for some reason has done something to draw the same sort of scorn of the gossipmongers that Bree is facing.
Then Bree dropped out of school, but tried to stay friends with Cassie.
Then Cassie got too freaked out about Bree's religion and broke off the friendship.
Then Daniel became Bree's primary friend, and Bree probably didn't discuss her religion much with him.
Then as Bree became more comfortable with Daniel, eventually she thought he knew her and her parents well enough to not be freaked by her religion, but has been unpleasantly surprised to find Daniel reacting similarly to Cassie.

She probably did want to keep a bit more boundaries after the whole Cassie debacle. Why won't Daniel get that he is just pushing Bree INTO this ceremony by persuing this line of wierdness?
Plus, who the hell does he think he is that he needs to save her?
Boys!
I mean, am I right?

Right, I agree with Nora. Bree said for the first week, no one noticed her. After that, Daniel asked her to eat with him and her friends. At some point, she met and befriended Cassie. This leads me to believe Cassie was likely one of Daniel's friends ... in fact, it supports my theory that Cassie and Daniel were previously a couple.
As for Bree saying she should have believed when Daniel showed her who he was the first time, they have argued before. They argued about the religion and camp and over what Bree's dad told him. So maybe at that point he was trying to make a point about her religion, and they ended up making up. Maybe she's saying she should have seen how he is then.
I think this is really pushing the conflict even further between Daniel and her religion, setting up nicely for him coming in to save her from the religion!!

not even existing...
I find it extremely interesting that bree stated that she "didn't even exist." this could tie into any number of very interesting philisophical and quasi- religious ideas. The theorey of being vs non being goes back to the pre- socratic greek philisopher Parmenides who argued that nothing can not be. However according to Parmenides, bree would be making an impossible statement because he theorized that nothing can not be. Non-existence is an idea that has been toyed with for centuries, and as I'm a scholar of such dusty things I figured it was an interesting little tidbit of info onto how the whole debate existence vs. nonexistence, being vs. non being etc.
On a completely different note, by saying "I didn't even exist!" bree might have been giving us an important clue. maybe it was not bree that the kids ignored- maybe it was someone else. Perhaps bree had yet to be created, and the character of bree only came into being after she was removed from public school. the mind is a tricky thing. anywho, just a bit of conjecture.

I think its probably very relevant to the plot, or at the very least Bree's character development that she uses this phrase. the actual quote is "When someone shows you who they are, believe them." and you were correct in saying that it comes from Maya Angelou, which makes it quite important. Maya Angelou is predominantly known for being a feminist writer. Lately we've been seeing an increasingly feminist element in Bree's character, and using a phrase from an empowering woman such as Maya Angelou indicates to me that at the very least shes beginning to look at the world from a much different perspective.ghostvoices wrote:Bree must be an Oprah fan... Oprah often uses that "When someone shows you who they are, believe them" quote. I think it was Maya Angelou who originally told Oprah it, and now she uses it all the time.
Anyways, irrelevant to the plot, but I thought it was amusing.
