Bree's Religion: Plymouth Brethren

Post by BigDaddy »

I propose that Bree's family attend the Plymouth Brethren Church. This website has quite a few details about the church:

http://brethrenpedia.quist.ca/wiki/Plymouth_Brethren

As you'll read, they are also called "Darbyites," hence the Darbyite designations on the website.

Interestingly, they also allow the Holy Spririt to directly guide their services. This seemingly-random choosing of hymns and scripture would explain the "bibliomancy" references Bree using when explaining her services.

Daniel has told us about the Plymouth references in the play he witnessed, which fits in with the Plymouth Brethren theory.

Of course the big question is the Crowley/Thelemic references on the site and movies. As you know, Crowley was raised by the Plymouth Brethren. I propose that Bree's picture of Crowley could have a couple explanations. Maybe she has the picture up as a joke, or as a youthful rebellion. Crowley is the "lost son" of the Plymouth Brethren, so it makes sense a young girl growing up in the church would be interested in his sad story. Possibly it was a gift from Daniel, who wants her to rebel against her church, like his hero Crowley did.

My guess is that "Cassie," the alternate personality of Bree, hung up the picture of Crowley. Cassie is the opposite of Bree. While Bree still clings to her childhood relegion of PB, "Cassie" is rebelling. Cassie is obsessed with Crowley, the evil man spawned by the PB church.

As far as the upcoming ceremony, it's probably some pedestrian PB service. Now Cassie, on the other hand, might have different plans for the service.... Since the ceremony coincides with her hero's birthday (Crowley), she may plan to turn it into some kind of Thelemic ceremony. Should be interesting...
