Well, gemetria is part of the Kabbalah that allows you to see how things connect. As far as what the original authors had in mind, if you're talking about books of the Bible....then you have to use gemetria and kabbalah. They did.
Of course, you're right. I'm not religious myself, so I guess I am coming at this from a historical point of view. As you say, these are the tools they used to write the Bible, so you need them to interpret it.

My main point--which I seem to be doing a bad job of making--is really just a complaint about the hacks I see out there (around here). I am by no stretch an expert in this area, or even much of a neophyte, but it seems that ever since the Da Vinci Code everybody in America thinks they see hidden connections between things. Number symbolism is a big favorite for this kind of thinking, probably because it's so easily manipulated.

Well, some would say that our perceptions are skewed to see everything as separate when in reality they're not.. ;) That's actually one reason for the Kabbalah...once you follow it long enough and diligently enough, you realize everything IS connected on a deep level...

I understand what you're saying though. Conspiracy theorists are a dime a dozen. But, I think some people gain amazing insights using numbers in a spiritual way. What is the saying? "Math is the language of God".

If it weren't for this kind of research, we wouldn't know the music that was hidden in the building of Rosslyn Chapel: http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=2020832005

So, while I agree there are hacks....I also state that there are legitimate uses as well

I hadn't seen the stuff about Rosslyn chapel. That's really cool. I know that there is a ton of number symbolism in especially medieval art, architecture and music. It's some amazingly fascinating stuff. There's a 15th century piece by Dufay called Nuper rosarum flores that's famous (among musicologists I guess!) for its use of number symbolism and proportion to recreate the proportions of the duomo in Florence. I LOVE figuring out that kind of stuff.

I think what makes what you're saying hard for me to grasp is simply that I'm not on the same kind of spiritual path as you. Maybe I'm looking just for what was, and you're looking for what is.

Yeah..that could be it. What may appear as obvious to me might never occur to you...and vice versa. One things initiations do is help you get to the level where you can see things for yourself...introducing you to things that become more clear as time goes on, etc. But, i think that if you're going for an initiation, a lot of it makes sense to you already or you wouldn't be there.

So yeah...we could just be looking at things from totally different perspectives. To me though, everything can be boiled down to math. It's like one of the things John Nash did. He decided mathematically how to determine when parties sit down for negotiations, when they'll reach a point where they'll be satisfied with the outcome. A lot of people don't see how something like that could figure mathematically at all. Me, I'd be surprised if something COULDN'T be factored mathematically. *I* may not know how, but it's got to be there somewhere.

It's a core belief of mine that not only can everything be reduced to mathematical terms, but everything can be found to be related to everything else. We create distinctions and perceive seperatedness that simply isn't there. To me, that's our real "fallen" state. We see ourselves separate, everything around us as separate..and in reality, nothing is. We see things as chaotic and without cause...and in reality, everything has a cause...everything can be reduced to a formula.

On the 666/616 note:

The Great Beast in greek = 666
and if you leave off the "n" sound in To Mega Therion = 616
and the "n" sound in greek has been represented in the english language as "Nu" which again is the name of a deity with some import in the Thelemic mythology.

666 is also the sum of the numbers 1-36 making it a "mystic" number of 36 and then inheriently solar (6 is a solar number 6x6=36, 666 is 1-36 summed up.)

Math is most certainly the language of the gods.

Isn't it just great how the internet has provided a forum by which study of religions can be moved out of those stodgy old universities, with their stupid old professors who are just dummies that happen to have a piece of paper that says they know something, and into the hands of Internet Gurus, people who have a lot of time on their hands to post to message boards and therefore are obviously the TRUE masters of knowledge for all things religious. Tannhaus is a gleaming example of such a master! His ability to collect his checks while being immobile gives him the time necessary to educate everyone on what things in our world really mean!!! Hooray!!!

Sorory, you really don't need to share with me or the rest of the board whether your vibrator is on or off. In any case, I'm glad it's off. That way you can save the batteries, because lord knows you go through a lot of batteries for it.

And hang in there, maybe you'll find a man one day, and then you won't need the batteries so often. Maybe. It sounds like Tannhaus is available, but you have to share him with his boyfriend. Has he responded to any of your advances yet? Good luck with your cyber romance! Who knows, maybe you two can get married by the Horned God and the High Priestess in the OTO Temple of the Dog one day!

Ta TA!!!
