I see I'm not the only person who thinks that ummm...friend is an acceptable and polite euphemism.

It's a good one... though where I grew up friends were friends but "buddies" were more. You didn't need to say f-buddy, it was just understood.

My parents are doctors so every-once-in-a-while when I was younger, I'd hear horror stories. Nothing too personal, because of privacy issues and whatnot. But freaky, nonetheless.

I think buddy is a touch less elegant than saying, "This amazingly stunning creature is my.... umm, friend," and following the statement with an ambiguous smile.

Of course, I'm talking about introducing the buddy to people you know.
