As Jo said, OpAphid is an ARG, an alternate-reality game. The goal behind the game is to have fun. The meaning behind finding the drops (you are right, that's what the things left for the players to find are... drops) is for people to work out clues left behind.
It really is fun, especially if it is controlled by an experienced PM (Puppet Master, the person/persons in control of the game.
