Actually we do not call what we speak in America "American." I certainly hope you wouldn't visit Mexico and ask someone to speak Mexican. It's English, just because certain phrases are different does not make it stupid. I'm sorry if an entire ocean separating 2 countries that speak the same language has changed some of the lexicon, hmm we'll try harder next time.
