I think the ceremony was going to be a sacrifice to an alien race that visits them every so often and thats why they are all freaked out about outsiders getting to know their way of life. When the ceremony happens, they give the chosen one as a sacrifice to the aliens to spare all their lives until the next ceremony. thats why they are all looking for her now cuz she skipped the ceremony and that guy that was with her parents in their driveway was one of the aliens in disguise. What do you guys think?

This reminds me of that animated movie where one species of bugs had to work to get enough food to sacrifice to some superior species of bugs or they would all die.
