Cainam and I have been hard at work deciphering the symbolism encoded in the ATHENToR "tarot" card. We were hoping to find out if our most recent developments are taking us in the right direction.

The Tower is a symbol of hubris punished by humility (a la the Tower of Babel). From what I know, this could certainly tell the story of the research at Facility J.

The card we received from you is numbered "XVI + I". Our latest hypothesis is that the story told therein is that The Magician (card I) is using an alchemical furnace, The Tower (card XVI), to transmute The Star (card XVII). So our new hydrophilic friend is the sum of the ingenuity of a scientist and the power of an attempt by humans to reach into heaven.

Is this accurate, if not complete in scope?

As I perused my Tarot deck, I couldn't help but notice the similarity between the letters on the Wheel of Fortune (X) and ATHENToR. My Hebrew is a little rusty, can you tell me if the other four letters fill in the blanks left by AToR?

My advice is that you not play with a full deck.

It is a fortunate coincidence that the four letters RoTA mean wheel. You are circling the answer. The symbolism of the wheel and it's application to the matter at hand is worth your consideration. Do not labor unecessarily to "fill in the blanks" in this case.

ATHENToR has "rotate" as a sub-anagram, which is strongly implicated by Jay's language in the above. The 'o' being lowercase could simply be to draw attention to it being round and wheel-shaped.

What's left in ATHENToR are the letters 'h' and 'n'; no idea at this point what to do with those.

I think this means we're going to have to use some kind of rotation scheme in decrypting something in the near future.

The question of "nature versus nurture" is so difficult to address. Since almost every two people differ greatly in their inborn traits, controls for such experiments are nearly impossible, especially considering the ethical guidelines currently in place for federally funded research. Some of the most compelling results have been achieved by working with twins. If human clones had ever been produced, I suppose that might be fertile ground for such studies as well.

On the other hand, maybe these sorts of things have been done, and I just haven't heard about them. Is there another Star in the sky?

True, the effects of nurture as opposed to nature have indeed long been a puzzle. This project was privately funded, and as such our guidelines were governed by the Foundation. “Federal ethics guidelines” have never been a concern. But you have deduced this already, I’m sure.

As you so astutely surmise, not everything conducted in laboratories is released to the general public – or the research community for that matter. Some things remain secret for a reason.

The sky is full of stars, though not all shine with equal brilliance.
