[PUZZLE][SOLVED] 12-10-06 Movie Night
Moderator: Moderators
I just watched Risky Business to double check, but the thing about class going long. Keep watching because Tom Cruise looks up at the clock three times. The last time it says 28 after the hour instead of 29. It moves backwards and he yells out "god damn or something" right after that.
Might it be 28?

Okay so the following me trying to stay caught up with me writing an essay.covedweller wrote:I just watched Risky Business to double check, but the thing about class going long. So fifteen videos could mean increments of 4 (with rounding perhaps?) since 60 minutes divided by 15 is 4.
So if we count minutes and spare the hours... an hour divided by 15.
SOMEONE SMARTER PLEASE FOLLOW ME UP. MATH KILLS MY HEAD.

Hiding Out is covered, thanks to my wonderful friend Pat out in Chicago. He'll have the results back within a few hours.
edit: Pat and Shep are both on it. Two at once after hours of nothing. Go figure.

It's learned that "Joshua" starts sending launch codes itself.
1:32 into scene 28, you get a close up of a screen at one of the silos. It's for the launch code, target selections, etc. Changes locked out.
PART ONE: launch code that's half cut off
PART TWO: 19:37:42
So there's our time!!
At 2:20 in scene 28, the lady (whose name I don't know, I haven't watched the whole movie) says, "At this rate, it'll hit the launch codes in 5.3 minutes." So there's the window!
W = woman
G = General
M = Mikkitery (I'm sure that's spelled wrong.)
W: At this rate, it'll hit the launch codes in 5.3 minutes.
G: Mr. Mikkitery? After very careful consideration, I've come to the conclusion that your new defense system sucks.
M: I don't have to take that, you pig-eyed sack of sh!t!
G: I was hoping for something a little better than that from you, a man of your education.
RandomGuy: General. It's the president.
M: W-w-what are you gonna tell him?
G: I'm ordering our bombers back to failsafe.
!!! That's 2:54 into scene 28.
G: We might have to go through this thing after all.
Then it cuts to an empty silo again, but no screen this time, then the launch code being hacked. There are no times after this.
Then there's all the tic tac toe stuff, blahblahblah. The launch code is CPE1704TKO. Ziz and Lad said something about 1704 being the time, but the other showing of time is sooo much closer, followed by the window they had and the mention of failsafe. But lad thought I should mention it.

SOMEONE SMARTER PLEASE FOLLOW ME UP. MATH KILLS MY HEAD.
If you ditch the hours in each of the scenes from the movies (midnight from The Sure thing becomes "00", 3o'clock High's number becomes "52", etc.), and put those in order from low to high (or high to low, if it's reversed the way that Tachyon "works" it sometimes), what does that give us? And should it -just- be the capitals in the answer, or both?
And did we ever figure out how Just One of the Guys' 60 minutes is placed in the equation...? Maybe last, for "60"...?
(Oh, and sidenote in response to diastres's note of the launch code in Wargames being "CPE1704TKO"...Jonas's screen name is "jonastko". A small fact that has me putting on a tinfoil hat from the conspiracy-theory-ness of it all.)
database
I don't think the puzzlemaker watched all of these movies and took random quotes. It must have used a movie quote database, a unique one. So I'm going to look for this key database and report back, stat.
Also, do we need to match the quotes to the movies? Has someone played with just the resulting text from the quotes?

Fair is Fair!
Re: database
They're not all quotes. Some are descriptions of scenes, or something seen in it.glowe126 wrote:I don't think the puzzlemaker watched all of these movies and took random quotes. It must have used a movie quote database, a unique one. So I'm going to look for this key database and report back, stat.

Re: database
It really does look like they were all watched to compile this. There is some sort of pattern with the numbers on the clocks, most likely just using the minute hands.glowe126 wrote:I don't think the puzzlemaker watched all of these movies and took random quotes. It looks like we wasted half of yesterday thinking we could find a shortcut, but it didn't work. Nothing happened until people started buckling down and watching the movies, sigh.
Who was complaining about things being too easy?

yeah
Yeah, you're right. I was just thinking of an easier way to do this, because I'm not sure what to do once I have the matches. Watch the movie Identity with Cusack and count off seconds? Count the number of seconds from the start of each movie to the actual quote? Wait, I like that one...
Fair is Fair!
