i think we need to drop the abusive moderator discussion and go back to suggestions on productivity and how to enhance it.
While I agree with self-moderation, you can only expect that to a certain level. And I really feel that moderators need to step their game up and realize that there is a problem with not only "flamers" and the way they put the policy into effect and when.
Again, though...mine was just an example to illustrate. I didn't mean to keep on it... in fact, I tried to be as general as I could. I also agree that self-moderation can only go so far...especially if the examples they have aren't the best.
If a user sees a mod lay out a personal insult or start (or ask to start) a flame war...then the user is more than likely going to think it's acceptable behavior. It makes the mods look like total hypocrites and they lose any effective power they may have had.
Admins/mods need to be examples first...moderators second. In the board that I moderate, there are times when I just want to strangle some people and call them all poopyheads. But I learned that if I mirror their behavior, it gives them my power, and they become the examples.
In certain sections of thisforum, that type of occurance is plainly evident. In others, it is more controlled. It's all in how it's done and that the users know that if you do A, you get B. Everyone treated the same... "friend" or "foe" -- the same.

Trainer, thanks for your perspective on things. I know I've said it here already..but the inconsistency is not with ALL of the mods here. I want to make that clear. There are a handful that I could name, for a variety of reasons both good and bad that I could point to for consistency issues.
I think it would be nice just to see everyone on the same page.

So has anything come of this that can be implemented?
EDIT:
I guess who I'd really like to hear from here are the moderators. The people who have the power to implement change.

I hope so, Luminous. At least we identified one of the issues, that's the step in the right direction.

I think there has been a lot of great suggestions, but now its completely in the moderators/administrators hands to put it into action.

Not that I don't appreciate hearing from you too

heh...I posted that before or at the same time as your edit, I think
I hope it helps...I hope theyre are actively discussing it in the deep dark confines. I'll be honest, my past experiences, for the most part, doesn't leave me very optimistic. Ever hopeful, though. Ever hopeful.
(I can't believe I'm quoting/using Jesse Jackson here...but that's all I can think of at the moment.)

This is really my first time in a forum. Kas, so if there was an ignore button, and you chose to ignore someone, you would not see any of thier posts? If that is the way that worked, I think that is a very good idea. I may not use is cause that type of stuff does not bother me unless we are in the middle of a drop.

You can't always cater to the children, just because one has a tantrum doesn't mean you have to punish the whole class.
Now I shall go back through and read what happened while I was sleeping.
Hi Buggar, I was there when it happened, and actually, it made sense to consolidate the discussion in one thread instead of having them run parallel.
it did make complete sense,
although it was nice to have an angry thread and a serious thread.
I'm scared this thread will turn into an anger thread
I didn't see it as an "angry" thread. It was all fine and dandy when I signed off for the night, and I check in in the morning and it's locked. Even if there was some "heated discussion" going on, what does locking achieve honestly? People just move somewhere else and then take it up again. Why not just let it be hashed out once and for all and over and done with, instead of this "recurring nightmare".
But, really, I didn't see anything in the locked thread that seriously crossed the line, but, I shall continue to catch up in this thread. I had to go out and do errands, so I didn't get very far before. I may comment more later

I agree, it really wasn't an angry thread. There was a little something that happened at the end, but no worse than what has gone on in this thread. Even though BK said something about it before he locked the thread, I think the real issue was that there were two potentially volatile threads going on simultaneously, and rather than having to moderate both of them in parallel, he made a judgement call to merge them. We who were actively discussing in the thread had already come to a place where we were considering we should start a fresh thread with a less volatile title. Instead of allowing that to happen - and having THREE threads on this subject line, we came here. I don't think it was a bad call on BK's part. I just wish he had asked us first instead of locking the thread without any real warning.
