why did you lock it?

Post by epogen »

i definitely do not want to spark flames here, but why was tthe flame war thread locked? i mean isn't there supposed to be an explanation when it gets locked?

as a new poster, but watching kinda gal, i was interested in what was going on there.

also i read there that there was a thread locked about someone giving love to their friend, but see a few more like it on the board, so am confused.

again, not trying to start drama, but wanting to make sure i don't cross some invisible line here. i don't get it, and that's all i am trying to say.
they'd reach for the tequila and tell you, progress is progress

yea i'm a little curious as well. The conversation was starting to get back on track and brack on topic, and there were some really good points being made that could easily be discussed.

It was locked because it was drastically off-topic and turned into a war itself. That discussion was split off, but the heated posts continued. I will unlock the thread now that people have had time to cool off.

So not to be a pest but...

Is it too much to ask how that issue was handled?

As a side note... I would really like to know how the admin and MOD's feel about what has been suggested here and if they feel a change could do some good or not... :D

Thanks,
IRR

Aaaand...now it's unlocked. Carry on..though I don't know what else could be talked about without anyone saying if some of the suggestions are good/bad/will be implemented, etc...and by someone I mean whomever could implement, etc...

I'll just say one last thing about it and then I'm done with the entire debacle.

I understand that my sense of humour may be disagreeable to some, and that's okay, I'm fine with that. I can accept it because, mark this well, I'm not here to dictate how others should think and feel. It might not be such a bad thing if others could learn to extend the same courtesy.

I will also say that I'll take my sense of humour any day of the week over the twisted sense of duty that has convinced some of you that railing against me somehow constitutes a meaningful contribution to your futile crusade, vague and unfocused as it is. One might try, and very well succeed, at suppressing any disagreeable expression, whether it actually promotes or otherwise endorses antisocial behaviour or not. But behaving in such an irrational manner is no way to protect the world from the true culprits.

In conclusion, before you choose to react to this post on a purely emotional, sub-human level, I'd ask that you instead choose to exercise the mental faculties you ought to have used in the first place, and come to the realisation that these simple truths I've outlined are so plainly self-evident that you'd be embarrassed by the former bloodthirsty zeal with which you'd pointlessly tilted against one phantom windmill.

Thank you.

It would have been nice to post an explanation, though, as to why you were locking it, especially after pulling out posts some of us never got to see. Anyone reading just this thread as it was when locked could easily be confused.

BK...just another really good example of the need for consistent moderation. It's the little (and seemingly innocuous) inconsistencies like that do the damage and lead to bigger far more frustrating and hurtful issues.

If you guys are going to post an explanatnion for locking a thread...then you should do it every time...or not at all. Personally, posting a note would be my preference, and more than likely others' as well.

well i think we're all on the basic same page. And that page means that something has to be done, and there needs to be more consistency. (BTW thanks BK for showing consistency earlier today with on of my posts that went over board. it was appreciated)

I think now all we need is a statement from the moderators and administrators, maybe even the creators, noting that they do see the same problem we're discussing. I just want some one on the management part to admit it, because I've seen a hell of a lot of denial from that side of things.
Also I think we need to know that actions are being taken now. I understand that BK posted earlier stating that our issues and suggestions are not being ignored. But, in all honestly, as much as I *lurve* you BK, I'm not going to take that statement seriously until i see results. Whether I like them or no, we need proof, and I think we deserve it. I mean we've stayed pretty level headed in this coversation, even though there have probably been times where we felt like dicapitating each other.

There are some ways to avoid conflict like this...

1) Just not say things that could offend peolpe. It is a PERSONAL choice to do so. No one is saying anyone else can not speak their mind but if you KNOW that there is a bit of a shrp edge to your statement you may want to reconsider posting it...

2) Once someone has been offended... Apologize. It doesn;t make you any less of a person to say sorry. Nor does it nullify your point. Something like, "Sorry if that offended you. I wasn;t out to yupset anyone." could avoid the ENTIRE thing... and I know others may overreact in response but sometimes it's OK to let that go right?

3) If it was a joke in the first place and others take it too seriously... Why not just apologize and realize that it is no big deal. In most cases it says ALLOT more about the person freaking out that it says about you any how...

THIS is what "Self Moderation" means... But if you go out of your way to do things like personally attack the person (EVEN if they are personally attackign you...) or resort to namecalling and ranting on and on and not getting anywhere then you are not making a REAL attemp to solve the issue... You are trying to "Win"

All any of us have to do is give up the need to "Win" and be right and things could be MUCH nicer around here... :D

PS - Notice I am not making any personal attacks or trying to change anyone mind abou tthe actual issue itself ;)

I read through this thread yesterday, and had a couple of thoughts which may or may not be relevant.

First, I agree that the moderating is kind of loose around here, but I am not sure it is wrong for that to be so. I read some threads, and find the flames amusing. I read others and get pretty annoyed.
I find that there are some things that are not meant to be flames that are incredibly inconsiderate, and even sometimes think that people's attitudes are ridiculous. There are several people here who have a very distinct sense of humor that I do not share, or understand, but it doesn't offend me that they are not funny to me.

The same is true of most posts in most threads too. If I think you are funny, or friendly, or right, I don't mind off topic, but if you are talking about something uninteresting to me, I wish I didn't have to read ten pages of one sentence replies back and forth. . This is probably true of a lot of us. Some things amuse us, some things annoy us. How are we to presume that the mods would know or care which was which? Censorship is unneccesary, since we have the power to ignore posts ( though I do like the ignore button option) or respond to them in whatever way we choose.

If the mods do start intervening more, I am not sure it will be a good thing, as there is no way to guarantee true consistency. I agree that there have been instances that seemed a bit skewed to me, but don't think that more moderating is a solution to that, as it will necessitate a more biased environment.

Finally, one of the things I try to remember while here is sheer diversity of this forum. We have a lot of different communication styles, and many different ages represented here, which can create part of the drama; diplomacy was something I learned well after high school, and while I was in college I challenged eveything, when I had kids I started talking to everyone as if I were their mom. Never once did I think that I was wrong in doing so, nor did I think there was any reason not to be like that. Since there can be so much variation in one person, I see no reason why we can't expect it here.

I don't think many are really asking for more or sterner moderation...the concensus has centered on consisten moderation.
