Actually, sim...I hate to call you out...but in candide, and in my french (yes, plain french dictionary, not french to english) putaine IS a word. And it has two meanings...whore and bitch, and in this context it would mean bitch.
Also, I might have mispelled voirié (Can't find it right now...) but that is indeed a word for essentially gutter.

It's not fighting LOL! He was correcting my french, but it seems we have stumbled upon a difference in québecoise and français. Neither of us is truly wrong, simply a difference.
