I'm searching for all the exact articles where these tidbits of stuckup goodness appear, and found this. It's taken from a WSJ article way back in 04. Unfortunately you have to subscribe to read the whole thing, but I thought this part was funny:

The hodgepodge of characters in "Lost," in particular, reflects the network's desire to capture every conceivable demographic. Among the crash survivors are a Korean couple who speak little English, an obese comedian, a Middle Eastern man, a pregnant woman, a single Dad, and a few hunks thrown in for good measure. And then there's the man-eating monster. "You never know who's going to pop," says Mr. Lindelof, the executive producer. But at least the show's deserted-island setting means no new characters can arrive. "It's not going to be like 'Gilligan's Island,'" Mr. Lindelof says, "where the Russian cosmonauts suddenly wash up on the beach."

I really hope they move it back to 9 again - it just fit in my schedule a whole lot better!

I really hate this time of the season - I can't hardly wait for the season finale, but at the same time I don't want the season to end.

Lost To End In 2010

The end is in sight for ABC's acclaimed island mystery Lost, but fans will have to wait until 2010 for all the answers.
In a highly unusual move, the network announces plans today to end the show after three more shortened seasons of 16 episodes each. The episodes will air consecutively, repeat-free, from February to May.

I don't mind knowing the end date, but I'm totally bummed that it's dropping down to only 16 eps a season. That's totally lame.

Yeah it's total shitcakes.

However, playing devil's advocate, I can see some of the good points that the article touches upon.

Shorter seasons will allow plots to be more tightly constructed and "will make it a real event," Lindelof says. "We won't have to do episodes where people are standing on the beach looking at the water and wondering what's going to happen next."

This is true. It's going to be more real time and things are going to happen faster. They know what the final episode's number is going to be, so they can pace what needs to be revealed in (hopefully) a more concise way.

Hopefully this also means less filler (tree frog, ping pong games..yes it's amusing but we don't need all these comedic breaks instead of answers). And more answers! Did I mention that, yet?

But honestly, we're talking a....9 month hiatus, something like that? How the hell do they think they're going to keep anyone other than us die-hard fans watching? Because with all the new stuff coming out, movies, teh internets, DVR/TiVos.......I see people giving up. Don't give me any of that "well it worked for Harry Potter" crap, because the two are apples and oranges. I personally think a 2 season, 24 ep idea would work a lot better, and the only reason I see the network execs stretching it out is MONEY. Yup, 3 more DVD sets, and tons more commercials. Yay for them!

What I'm most worried about is that the casual viewer is not going to want to put up with this shit and they're going to start leaving in droves. And that equals cancellation.

Sigh. This is a mixed bag here, folks.

Yeah - I agree totally. I too would much prefer two 24ep seasons. It seems to me that they're trying to emulate HBO's scheduling (Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, etc) with this - long hiatus followed by uninterupted season. By my count this makes it 8 months off and 4 months on approximately. 8 months is definitely a long haul but the HBO shows above have had some success with keeping an audience using this type of set up so hopefully it will be successful because I really want to see the end of this story!

Yeah people have been saying that this is like how HBO treat s/ed their shows. I only watched Rome so luckily I haven't had to deal with HBO stomping on my heart...much.

I guess it comes down to the ol' quality/quantity debate, huh? Problem is, we can do a lot of assuming NOW, but we don't actually know if these 16ep seasons (which, I don't know, if they counted the season finale in that or not...so it could only be 15) are going to be GOOD. What if they're crap?

I feel like they're going to loose a lot of people asking them to wait 9 months for a 3 month payoff. And that's not even taking into consideration the death watch! How many deaths will we have by 2010? And will they be glossed over like Ana Lucia's death because they wont have the proper time to deal with them, like Boone or Shannon's?

And what about the DVDs? I'm going to be mighty pissed if I'm paying 70+ dollars for something with much less material on it than the first 3 episode DVDs.

Remember, if they keep going with the forumula they've been following now, that's 13(or 12?) regular episodes and THREE Jackass episodes a season.

If they have less episodes the dvds should be less expensive. That's how it has been with other dvd sets I have bought.

I guess there is really no use bitching about anything, because the tv gods have already decided. :/

Well i personaly hope its the elss filler more quality. iv already been crushed becuase Virgin media couldnt make a dumb deal with sky and missed out on half the current season. (Thank god for the internet i can still watch) I dont know how many times my friends have complained about the filler episodes.

It is a long wait but over here we had to wait an extra 6 months to see the seasons 1 and 2 after america had started. I also remember reading they have a backup plan to end the story reavealing all the answers if ABC want to drop the show due to low rateings.

The first part of the last season of the Sopranos was about $70 here.

I told my friends about this in college and they said the same thing about 9 months is al long time to wait. They orginialy thought i meant 9 months till the uk get them so it was a bigger shock that that was american airing.

I think mayby we will find something about Jacob tomorrow it warns spoilers but i duno if i should go into it. I think this how everyone else is doing it

I will say that the flashbacks are ben related. And the title is called "The man behind the curtain if you can make the conection there.

You know what's really interesting, is isn't this a Ben flashback episode too? Now put that together with what you wrote, and it could be a bang up of an episode! I hope so. It's the least we deserve after this madness.

Well i didnt know whether to discus it incase i spoil but anyway. Ben used the name henry gale. This is the name or dorathys uncle in the wizard of oz. In the story he pretends to be the wizzard of oz. This is where man behind the curtain comes from. This means the episode reveals that ben is not the true leader and we may get to knwow ho it is. I also know about the last 2 episodes but hush hush for now. but their episod etitles are "Greatest hits" and "Through the Looking Glass"

Tomorrow is a DHARMA flashback, which would probably be just the coolest thing. Ever.

2nd Edit: Further thinking, DarkUFO had reported that "The Brig" was supposed to be a Jackback, and it wasn't. So it still stands to reason that the last episodes flashbackers aren't correct either. However, I'm pretty damn sure that "Greatest Hits" is a Charlieback.
