Here is a thought for the day: NURSES: I admire your profession. It's very noble and you'll probably never find me doing it....but for the love of god, when a patient rings the nurses station and tells you they need to go to the bathroom and need your help, could you get to the room in under 30 minutes?? Damn. My family member is in the hospital right now, so I've spent a lot of time there the last few days. I hate the hospital. I know the nurses work hard and they're very busy..so it's normal to have to wait for a while when you need something because they have to prioritize and everything...but when you have to go potty, geez..come on!
OK.
Cops...check
nurses...check
maybe I'll do teachers next
Spaciegirl,
I am a Certified Nurses Aide and I know first hand what you are talking about, although I worked in a nursing home, not a hospital. Either setting, someone should answer your call light under 3 minutes. Being able to go to the bathroom is not only a necessity, but a matter of dignity for the patient. If your call light is not answered within 3 minutes (5 tops) go out into the hallway and raise hell!!!! This is your loved one and they deserve all the care and respect in the world.
If the nurses on duty give you a hard time, go to the charge nurse, or better yet, the hospital administrator. That way it will have to be put on an official complaint form, which means tons of paperwork and investigating for the staff. They do not want to do this, therefore, I bet you won't have to do it more than once. You shouldn't have anymore problems with your call light being answered after that.
I hope your loved one is doing well.

MrsCop wrote:That's a pet peeve of mine. And, say your nurse is working a code or fighting an alcoholic with DT's...there SHOULD be enough nurses aides on the floor to help with stuff like peeing/throwing up/etc! grrrrrrrrrrr
Yes, there should be, but unfortuntly there isn't. Like I said in my previous post, I am a CNA and the burnout amoung us is very high. We do all the "shit" work (pun intended) and we care for the patients on a more intiment level. Big turnarounds, not enough training, and bad management causes alot to leave the profession- not to mention low pay. Nurses too have a huge shortage.
Alcoholic's with DT's- been there on the care end both personally and professionally, and there are never enough nurses and aides to care for them.

Omegawoman, thanks for the well wishes. That's very nice of you. Everything is fine, she's doing good. Trust me, we've had to raise hell many times in that, and other hospitals....but usually for more serious issues. If you get a little testy with them, they'll get their butts in the room faster. I just wish they'd come when first asked. It seems like you always have to pester them to stay on top of things. I mean, I feel kinda bad asking the same questions over and over again and having to call the nurse's station so much...but damn, if they'd just keep on track and do what they say they will, it wouldn't be an issue. I think they're understaffed...and god knows they're definately underpayed so we try to be as patient as possible. The hospital just sucks any way you slice it and it's hard to be in a situation where you have to put your trust in people you don't know. I could never be a nurse...many of them are saints, it's really amazing.

I don't "get" poetry. I feel real left out. I love music, that's like poetry kind of, right?
Damn engineering ruined my brain.
