Bottom line: I'm not a baker. I made a loaf of bread in the bread machine, as I've done before, but this time added some pesto that I'd made during the summer! Good idea, right? Meh. The top of the bread sunk in like a souffle and it didn't cook so evenly in the middle.

For it to have worked, maybe you should have added more baking soda? I dunno. I'm an awesome cook, but a novice at baking. I would think that the pesto sauce weighed the dough down or maybe it was that the oils in the sauce "broke down" the bread's ability to rise...

I think you're totally right. I've never been much of a baker therefore never anticipated this reaction. But I am a pretty good cook - not as great as you, though. I've read about the different dishes you've made. I'd fail miserably in that category.
