Private Message Delays

I've noticed that it takes a long time for private messages to clear my outbox. Why is this?

Maybe I'm being blatantly obvious, and if I am I'm sorry for that, but messages stay in your Outbox until the person you've sent it to has read it. That's when it makes the jump to your Sentbox.
