Manipulating YouTube Videos

(Formerly (Edited by moderator): Creators Resort to Cheap Tricks?)

Unless I'm missing something, there is a serious problem here that the Creators need to address. The revver and YouTube versions of the latest video ("The Unthinkable Happened") are different in a very significant way which could potentially have serious implications.

And it appears they're only doing it to manipulate YouTube in a completely cheap and irresponsible manner.

In the YouTube version, there's a quick shot of Bree from a previous video edited into the middle, so that instead of seeing the side of a guy's face before watching the video, potential viewers see Bree. This is done so more people will watch. It is explained away in the description to the video like this:
Daniel here (yeah, yeah on Bree's account... and I put a freeze frame of her so you'd watch... it's important). We caught up to Bree... well... just watch.
Okay, now I can buy that Daniel's character would do that. That's perfectly fine. But here's where it crosses the line. It also indicates true intentions and is a slippery slope to something that could be dangerous to both the series and this new type of filmmaking: IT'S NOT THE SAME VIDEO FEATURED ON THIS SITE AND ON REVVER.

That means they didn't do it to advance the story, but in a cheap attempt at views. In the two (different) descriptions of both videos, we know Bree didn't post the video to her own account. It isn't about plot.

Now I'm fine with them wanting people to watch. I want more to watch, as well. But where do we draw the line, so long as we're splicing in images PURELY for views? The creators would certainly get more views if they spliced in a pornographic images, but obviously that would in completely the wrong direction.

Again, if it's in the character of Daniel to do that, fine, although I disagree that it is. However, in this case, I don't think it even matters, since motives are hinted to by the fact that there are two different versions.

Again, this clearly wasn't about plot, but purely about views.

I understand that this is a new medium and that new things will be tried. But it's also up to the fans to point out when something crosses the line.

This crossed the line.

Please, Creators. Make the two videos consistant. I don't really care too much which one you change, but change one of them. And from now on, please be careful before going down this road. This type of manipulation is incredibly ugly.

Also, as somebody who goes to YouTube, I can tell you that I don't appreciate when this technique being used. The Creators aren't the first, as I'm sure they know, and it's incredibly annoying when anybody does it.

I must say, I was also shocked when I saw them pulling this dirty nasty trick, simply because I felt that they are way above that. What a level to stoop too! I hope they don't make a habbit of it! lonelygirl15 should set an example to the rest of the youtubers by NOT doing that! They are already the most popular channel on youtube! It doesn't matter if the middle shot is a blurry shot of darkness!

To those who have defended the manipulation in the poll, I'd appreciate a dissenting viewpoint here. Honestly, I don't see how it can be justified when it's clearly not for plot purposes. Would you be fine if this was a common occurance?

No, i do not believe it should be a common practice but to me it was a minor change and i did not see it as a major alteration to the overall video. Now if they had added polar bears dancing the hula in the YouTube vid i might laugh at first but be ticked for that major inconsistency.

It did surprise me that they chose to do this to maybe gain more viewers on YouTube for the new year which already has a solid base. However, since they gave a message from Daniel saying the reason why he did the alteration, it made me think that they were maybe trying to show significance to this particular vid because what occured was a crucial point in the series. I am glad they gave a Daniel explanation it seems to give credibility to it, whereas just making the thumbnail change and going about their marry way would have been wrong.

Lonelygirl15 has at least 10 times the subscribers of any of the other accounts on YouTube. Look at the number of views for Bree's videos vs. the other accounts.

Also look at the # of views for videos that feature a Bree thumbnail versus those that don't.

Daniel apparently did that and took charge of the situation. He explained it. If it becomes a habit that's one thing but for this video he wanted everyone to see what the Order did to his friend's Dad. I assume that's why he'd post such a thing in the first place.

And clearly he's shaken up right now, so we should cut the guy some slack.

I always watch the one on the site first (well of course... it is up first).
I watched the YT one once it came up, I think the quality is different and I have always wanted to catch something like this. But it interrupted the video. Not only do I think it is a cheap way to get views, it interrupts the flow of the video.

There were two different videos posted! (One to Revver, one to YouTube.) One had the inturruption, and the other one didn't.

You know it's a cheap trick. I know it's a cheap trick. Let's not pretend otherwise.

There wouldn't have been two different versions if it was a plot devise, like you seem to be claiming.

This is a great point, and I agree. For those of you who haven't actually watched the YouTube interruption, I reccommend you check it out.

We are just bothered by the Creators trying to trick people into viewing it. We dont mind we series. It is just erk-worthy when the revver and yt versions are different. We thought they were above that. It makes them stoop to the level of the people with the porn images in the middle to get more views like Eli said. And yes, it is manipulation... manipulation to get more views.

it's not like they always do it. this video warranted it on some level maybe.

its a little odd, but it doesnt change my views on the video as a whole or the series.

Well I am one of those super analyzer ones... I see something that I havent seen in the Revver one or when i downloaded it and looked at screencaps I get bothered. I guess it is just a personal thing. I personally dont like that they are trying to win more views in THAT way.

No i think it's worng that they had to reduce themselves to scamming for views either,, hopefully it doesn;t continue
