I haven't checked it out as far as googling to find a better picture of it...but it never seemed strange to me.
Reminds me of Scotch Irish paintings and such.

The houses look like olden English houses...although I could be wrong.

It's a painting by Edward Hopper, the "artist of lonliness".
Was a pretty clever and intellectual way with keeping with the whole "lonely" theme of Bree.
