I'm slightly behind times people, my internet went kaplooey and when I come back OpAphid is gone, a new ARG thing is here, it begins with 'M', and a new girl is wanted for the ceremony!!!
When I left hardly anyhting was happening. I come back and I can't follow anything! Would someone be kind enough to tell me whats going on?
I tried watching the videos but it didnt say anything aboot OpAphid going away or anything and I'm confused!
The last video I saw properyl was the one where they went to Mexico!

OpAPHID's over because of behind-the-scenes issues, there's no new ARG, and the Creators can't tell us what became of OpAphid, Tachyon and Brother themselves since they apparently no longer have license to use those characters. The closest we got to a resolution is this video from (the now fully-acknowledged as canon) Nikki Bower:

Well, if one's not counting the video where she followed Lucy or when OpAphid mentioned her in a message with a fan's in-character persona (which many felt might not be quite enough), it would be the recent video "New Girl" where Bree mentions Nikki Bower by name and follows her advice to investigate this girl named "Jules."

true, but even though she know the creators, she hasn't been announced as canon has she? But I guess she doesn't have to with those kinds of videos

Being addressed by Bree in a video (in which Bree then investigates someone Nikki told her to investigate)
would be the Creators announcing it. They make Bree's videos after all. It's the same way they "announced" Gemma and Jonas.

Still, though. You can reference another vlogger's videos without actually making them canon. Nikki B. is an actress, as we know, but there's no definitive "canon" announcement. Bree's called out other vloggers and forum users before, that doesn't make every one of them canon.

Listen guys, The Creators are using Niki B to explain things to us. She has done this many times before.
She uses her "secret informants" to get her information. THose secret people are of course the creators. They know we watch her, and they knew we listen and take what she says into high regard, especially now that we know that she's friends with them.
We're not arguing whether she's canon or not, because canon would mean she is relevant to the plot line, and really, she's not (yet). However, we do know that she gets her information from the people who control the plot. So when she says OpAphid is MIA (which...well we know anyways) is safe to assume OpAphid is MIA in the Plot Line.

We're not still waiting for an announcement on Gemma and Jonas, are we? At a certain point, you've got to intuit without having it all spelled out. Some things are self-evident.

There's quite a difference there. Other YouTube vloggers were mentioned (like her in her introductory videos) at a time when it wasn't known that this was a production, and when they were trying to get a viewership built up - which would obviously be facilitated by mentioning popular vloggers (and even then, those people probably exist in the fictional world; it's supposed to be our world, after all). As for forum users, it's supposed to be a given that we all have an in-universe persona in the fictional world.
Fanfiction is such that some of it probably could not be acknowledged without creating plot inconsistencies. Apparently the Creators feel that Nikki Bower's videos not only would not create inconsistencies if included, but that they could also be used to advance the plot.
She's a living, breathing character in Bree's world that Bree has acknowledged and taken action based on the advice of. I don't know how much more "canon" a creator of fanfiction can get (that's as far as Gemma and Jonas went; no one ever jumped out and proclaimed them canon in any fashion beyond that).

Well, she's got Bree hunting for a new girl. I suppose how much of an impact she'll have actually had is based on what becomes of that, but she's certainly got the potential to have at least made as much of one as Random Girl (whose canonicity is beyond dispute).

Now, see? This is the kind of blurring of the lines that I think the Creators are looking for. I think they mean Nikki B to be in the gray area for the express purpose of making us unsure. It's a great tool to add a tincture of reality to the show.

While I'm not arguing that Nikki is canon (because of the Lucy video), the reason we knew Jonas and Gemma were canon was because their videos appeared on this site. Until that happened, no one was sure.

i agree. she's canonish, or half-canon, or something less than full canon. it's not something people are familiar with in terms of storytelling. any analogies? perhaps nikki is the real "new art form"?

That's true.

I don't understand how they/we can call Maddy Atkins "fanfiction" and TFW and HoO "not new ARGs". Very confused...
The way I see it is... all of these new elements are interactive. And aren't these three all controlled via the Creators?
So... to me, by definition, these three pieces make up the new ARG.
Thoughts?

I agree. Maybe they are trying to avoid making the same mistake they made with Glenn.
